In the latest episode of ‘Cornwall’ with Caroline Quentin, part of the programme was dedicated to the Fowey Carnival, which is part of the Royal Regatta Week.
The regatta is regarded as one of the top sailing events in Britain, and is one of the highlights of the year in Cornwall, attracting thousands of visitors over the week who are keen to catch a great view of the sailing action from above the harbour. Although the sailing regatta is a key part of the week, there is so much more besides that makes this a highlight in the Cornish calendar.
The full vibrancy, colour and fun of the carnival was on show during the programme, with locals dressing up in all kinds of costumes and fancy dress for the parade of floats, marching bands and walkers through Fowey.
A visit to the Regatta week is a great family day out with lots of things happening that will keep the younger ones entertained, such as crab catching competitions, swimming competitions, a fireworks display, live music and a giant pasty ceremony which culminated in the giant 8 foot long creation being carried to Fowey by boat, before it is cut up and handed to the children in attendance!
It’s no surprise that the event has attracted the likes of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and Queen Elizabeth II over the years!
This year’s Regatta week takes place between 18th-24th August so make a note of the date for a summer break or holiday, with Looe Bay and White Acres Holiday Parks both only 45 minutes or so away from Fowey, providing a great place to stay for exploring the region and spending a day out at the Regatta.
